Michigan sports betting wagers rise in September as online casino GGR dips slightly
Online sports betting wagers were up 64.9% on August 2026 and 3.9% on September 2025. Online casino gross gaming revenue was 0.9% lower than August 2026 and 15.9% higher than September 2025.
What the figures show
The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) published its September 2026 figures for online casino and online sports betting on 22 October 2026. Online sports betting wagers rose 64.9% on August 2026, while online casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) dipped 0.9% over the same month.
The release covers online casino and sports betting. For online casino it gives GGR, net gaming revenue (NGR) and state tax. For sports betting it gives wagers, GGR, NGR and state tax. The regulator's workbooks label these as total gross receipts, total adjusted gross receipts, total state tax or payment and total handle, and this story keeps those labels.
Online sports betting wagers, labelled total handle, were US$544,820,665.86 in September 2026. That was 64.9% above the August 2026 figure of US$330,491,956.53 and 3.9% above the September 2025 figure of US$524,349,161.71.
Online sports betting GGR, labelled total gross receipts, was US$55,507,357.64 in September 2026. That was 60.5% above August 2026 (US$34,586,306.90) and 27.4% above September 2025 (US$43,585,798.47).
Online casino GGR, labelled total gross receipts in the iGaming workbook, was US$300,233,147.72 in September 2026. That was 0.9% below August 2026 (US$303,016,075.53) and 15.9% above September 2025 (US$259,123,961.32).
Online casino NGR, labelled total adjusted gross receipts, was US$288,150,588.79 in September 2026. That was 18.4% above September 2025 (US$243,427,897.99).
Online casino state tax, labelled total state tax or payment, was US$60,637,476.131 in September 2026. That was 1.0% below August 2026 (US$61,247,193.059) and 19.5% above September 2025 (US$50,755,451.632).
The release notes that one sports betting tax figure is recorded as approximate in our data. This story leaves that figure out.
Every figure here is in US dollars, as the regulator published it. This story converts none of them and adds no sports betting figure to an online casino one.
How it compares
Two comparisons run through this story. Month-on-month changes are against August 2026, the month before September. Year-on-year changes are against September 2025, the same month a year earlier. Each percentage is our calculation from two figures for the same product, metric and currency, rounded to one decimal place.
The month-on-month picture is mixed. Online casino GGR and online casino state tax both eased slightly from August 2026, while sports betting wagers and sports betting GGR rose by more than half. Online casino tax moved in the same direction as online casino GGR against both comparison months.
The year-on-year picture is firmer. Every September 2026 figure in this story is higher than its September 2025 comparator: online sports betting wagers by 3.9%, online casino GGR by 15.9%, online casino NGR by 18.4%, online casino state tax by 19.5% and online sports betting GGR by 27.4%.
The largest changes are in sports betting. Its GGR rose 60.5% on August 2026 and 27.4% on September 2025, while online casino GGR moved 0.9% against August 2026 and 15.9% against September 2025.
Revenue and wagers measure different things, so this story compares each measure only with its own earlier month or year. It does not set one product's change against another's.
What to watch
The next Michigan iGaming and online sports betting revenue release is expected on 17 November 2026, according to our release calendar. Our records hold no Michigan figures for October 2026 yet, so September 2026 is the latest month this story can use.
The release says every figure in it is the first published version, and this story uses the figures as first published. The next release will add a month to the series and will show whether online casino GGR, which eased against August 2026 and rose against September 2025, moves the same way again.
This story gives no forecast for the next release and does not compare Michigan with other markets.
